What role do calcium-magnesium fertilizers play for grapes?
During grape cultivation, the demand for calcium and magnesium is quite high. Calcium and magnesium are macronutrients essential for grapes, yet they don't receive the same attention as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Relatively few growers specifically apply calcium and magnesium fertilizers. So, how can grapes be properly supplemented with calcium and magnesium? Let’s find out below! Calcium-magnesium fertilizer manufacturer Let’s find out together!
1. When should I take the supplement?
From the second fruit enlargement stage to the color-changing stage, grapes absorb large amounts of calcium and magnesium—accounting for about half of their annual uptake. Therefore, the application of calcium and magnesium fertilizers must be concentrated during this period.
2. What form does it take?
Some orchards will apply fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate calcium, calcium sulfate, and magnesium. Many of these fertilizers will be applied as base fertilizer in the autumn. However, phosphorus in the soil has a strong fixing effect on calcium and magnesium, making it difficult for roots to absorb and utilize these elements in their conventional forms. Therefore, it is essential to choose chelated or complexed forms of calcium and magnesium.
3. How effective is foliar supplementation?
Foliar supplements are quickly absorbed, but calcium absorbed by leaves is difficult to transport to the pulp. Moreover, foliar applications provide only small amounts of nutrients; for substantial supplementation, root application is necessary.
4. The function of calcium-magnesium fertilizers:
Calcium is an important quality element that enhances the resilience of fruits, enabling them to better withstand sun exposure and atmospheric damage, prolonging their shelf life on the tree, reducing fruit cracking, and improving storage and transportation qualities. At the same time, calcium is a key factor in sugar accumulation; supplementing calcium can increase the sweetness of fruits. Magnesium is a crucial element in the photosynthesis process. A magnesium deficiency can reduce the efficiency of photosynthesis, impair the accumulation of organic substances, and delay the color development of sugars.
Therefore, reasonable supplementation with calcium and magnesium fertilizers can promote early ripening of grapes and increase fruit sugar content, making it a key factor in ensuring the commercial quality of the fruit.
